Productive, Not Busy

We are busy people. We run from meeting to meeting, hustling through papers and reports. There’s nothing busier than somebody running their own business and looking to get ahead. If we’re not in one meeting, we’re dashing for the taxi and getting ourselves to the next meeting.

So what’s a busy CEO to do these days? Well, the first thin is to learn not to be busy for the sake of business…but rather to be productive.

You may initially think these things are the same. However, you would be wrong. They are vastly different. Productive people have learned the secret to working, and one aspect of it is the understanding of prioritizing. The secret to getting ahead is understanding what’s going to get you to the next level. It’s seeing how this work you are currently doing is going to lead to the next thing and above. Busy people do work for the sake of doing work. Productive people do work for the sake of getting on up to that next step.

The sooner you make that distinction for yourself the better off you will be with regard to your efforts in the office.
